FOUNDED 1877

Born from a vision. Built for a purpose.

Philander Smith University was founded in 1877 in Little Rock, Arkansas — a time when access to higher education for Black Americans was not a given, but a radical act of faith. Our founders believed that education was the path to freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

Nearly 150 years later, that belief still animates everything we do. PSU has grown from a small freedmen's school into an accredited liberal arts university offering degrees across six academic divisions, serving students from across Arkansas and the nation.

We are one of fewer than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities operating in the United States today — and we carry that identity not as a historical footnote, but as a living commitment to excellence, equity, and the full flourishing of every student who walks through our doors.
